In 2020, Nigeria has been ranked as the 16th worst affected nation by internet crimes.

The rating was published by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in its annual report, which was made public on Wednesday.

Nigeria, according to the study, is one of the top 20 foreign target countries of online crime.

Pakistan, China, Columbia, and Hong Kong were all ranked higher than Nigeria.

Apart from Nigeria, South Africa was also named as one of the “worst” 20 countries. South Africa came in sixth place with 1,754 casualties, while Nigeria had 443.

The top three crimes reported by victims in America in 2020 were phishing scams, non-payment/non-delivery scams, and extortion, according to the study, which also claimed that victims lost the most money to company email compromise scams, romance and trust schemes, and investment fraud.

“IC3 received a record number of complaints from the American public in 2020: 791,790, with reported losses exceeding $4.1 billion. This represents a 69 per cent increase in total complaints from 2019.
