According to the congregation that operates the facility, eight American nuns staying in a nursing home for sisters in suburban Milwaukee died of COVID-19 complications last week, including four that died on the same day.On December 9, when Sisters Rose M. Feess, 91, and Mary Elva Wiesner, 94, died, the first COVID-19 death at Notre Dame of Elm Grove occurred.
Sister Dorothy MacIntyre, 88, died on December 11 and according to the congregation’s website, Sister Mary Alexius Portz, 96, passed away on Sunday.
Sisters Cynthia Borman, Joan Emily Kaul, Lillia Langreck and Michael Marie Laux all died on Monday.
The Notre Dame Central Pacific Province School Sisters said other sisters staying at Notre Dame of Elm Grove were also diagnosed with COVID-19, but the international women’s congregation refused to provide further information, citing the privacy of the inhabitants. Linda Wickstrom, spokesperson for the Health & Human Services Department of Waukesha County, said county disease inspectors have been collaborating with the hospital since they were approached in November by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
‘Given the extreme contagiousness of this virus, it is exceedingly important for congregate settings to practice basic protocols to stop the spread of the disease,’ Wickstrom said.
She said the Notre Dame School Sisters were disinfecting high-touch surfaces, washing hands regularly, distancing themselves from each other and wearing appropriate face coverings. Sciano also added that it isolated all residents of the virus, and tourists are not tolerated.This comes months after many deaths from the coronavirus have been confirmed by related homes for elderly religious citizens.Thirteen nuns died at a convent outside Detroit back in July, and seven died at the Maryknoll sisters’ centre in New York. At least six nuns have died at the convent of Our Lady of the Angels in Greenfield, Wisconsin, a home devoted to the memory of the nuns of the St. Francis School Sisters and the Notre Dame School Sisters.
