The pandemonium in South Africa following the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma has reached its fifth day, with over 30 people killed as a result.
On Tuesday, July 13, protesters fought with security forces in numerous South African cities, while thieves destroyed retail centres.
The death toll has surpassed 30 people. According to KwaZulu-Natal state leader Sihle Zikalala, many of the killings happened in uncontrolled stampedes as dozens of individuals plundered food, electrical appliances, booze, and clothing from shopping outlets on Tuesday morning.
“The events of yesterday brought a lot of sadness. The number of persons killed in KwaZulu-Natal alone is 26. “Many of them died as a result of being trampled on during a stampede while people were looting,” Zikalala added.
Most stores have been damaged and completely looted. The looters even made away with coffins, live pigs, pig carcasses, and just about anything they could lay hands on.
