Seven people, including some schoolchildren, were reportedly killed in a fatal car crash on the Calabar-Itu road in Akwa Ibom state’s Itu local government district.
The crash occurred on Monday morning, March 15, along the Ntak Inyang section of the highway, and involved a fuel tanker and two tricycles carrying schoolchildren and some passengers.
The state government is currently repairing the Ntak Inyang district, which was cut off by a landslide. The Niger Pet Construction company in charge of the reconstruction work had closed one side of the road to traffic, requiring all cars to drive in just one lane.
According to reports, the Keke driver and passengers, including schoolchildren, were killed on the spot.
In response to the unfortunate development, the state’s Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) said that it was collecting information about the crash.
Confirming the number of casualties, the state Sector Commander, Oga Ochi, added that officers were promptly deployed to the scene after learning of the accident.
The FRSC sector commander, who claimed that the crash happened when the truck was driving at an unreasonable pace when it collided with the tricycles, also stated that the enquiry into the collision was continuing.
