Sevilla’s dreams of winning the Spanish La Liga were dashed on Monday when they were defeated 1-0 by Athletic Bilbao.
Inaki Williams scored in the 90th minute to give Athletic Bilbao a 1-0 victory at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
With a win, Julen Lopetegui’s side, fourth on 70 points, may have narrowed the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid (76), Real Madrid (74), and Barcelona (74).
For the hosts, Lucas Ocampos lost a decent early opportunity, and Ivan Rakitic followed close behind.
Unai Simon made a superb saving to deny Youssef En-Nesyri as Sevilla managed to lead but struggled to score.
Ocampos had an overhead kick which deflected wide early in the second half.
En-Nesyri headed off target as their desperation for a winner grew, and it played into Athletic’s hands.
Williams broke away in the final minute of the game and finished brilliantly for his sixth goal of the league season, to secure three points for Athletic Bilbao, ninth.
